Just about every dentist and oral professional in the world doesn’t like talking about Valentine’s Day – it’s an overplayed holiday that focuses on selling one thing above all others: Chocolate.

Sure, roses and teddy bears are popular, too. But little heart-shaped candies and delicious assorted chocolate boxes are too tasty to resist!

All this candy consumption leads to cavity-filled teeth and plaque buildup, which can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease. The yummy sugar eats away at our dental hygiene, it’s true.

That’s why we need to work extra hard to protect our pearly whites and precious gums during holidays like Valentine’s Day and Halloween. Stay on top of your oral health with these tips before, during, and after Valentine’s Day!


Tip #1: Don’t buy your significant other chocolates this year; find an alternative!

If you want to buy your Hunny something delicious to snack on for V-day, opt for a fruit basket. They’ve been gaining popularity over the years, and the natural sugars that they’re filled with aren’t so harmful to your teeth and gums.

Tip #2: Avoid foods that often stick to your teeth.

Remember, each encounter with the toothbrush should take at least 2 minutes of your time. Go up and down and side to side – and don’t forget that tongue and those gums!


 

Tip #4: Avoid tobacco products.


Cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes, among other tobacco products, are not good for your health or your oral hygiene. Plus, the tobacco damages your teeth and discolors them over the years – two problems you’ll want to avoid if you can. Quitting tobacco products is hard and does take a lot of will power, but once you throw that bad old habit in the trash, you’ll feel better in no time.


 



Tip #5: Eat healthy foods to strengthen your teeth and gums.


Foods high in Calcium and Vitamin C are best for your teeth and gum health. Such foods are especially great at preventing tooth decay, tooth loss, and gum disease.
